LAKE OCONEE IS FULL, 90 DEGREES BY AL BASSETT, 706 473 7758

Lake Oconee is 1/2 foot below full pool with a water temperature right around 90 degrees. Most of the lake is clear but you can find a little stain up the main creek and rivers and in the back of the pockets around the lake. Bass fishing is slow. As the bass are in their summertime pattern fishing deep or near deep water will be your best bet. Using a Carolina rigged worm on the end of long point or under water island is a good place to start. Before you start to fish this area spend some time looking at your depth finder looking for the baitfish in the area you are going to fish. If you find the baitfish, spend some time fishing there, if not move on to your next point and until you find the baitfish. The area called the bull hole and the pipe- line on the main lake is a good place to spend some time. Flipping under dock will also bring you a few bites. Work the docks that are in near or in deep water. Work all parts of a dock to see where they are holding.

Crappie fishing is fair. Night fishing with lights off the side of the boat is a good way to enjoy the night and catch a few fish. Daytime fishing is also fair if you will fish over the deep-water brush piles and the drop offs of the under water islands. When you catch your first fish made sure you fish that area real good as you may have found a school of fish. A live minnow has been the best bait to use.

Hybrids’ fishing is fair. When Georgia Power is moving water there are some hybrids schooling. Look for the schooling fish in the middle areas of the lake. Long points and under water islands and around the pipeline area is a great place to start.
