LAKE OCONEE IS FULL, 53 DEGREES AND STAINED

Bass fishing is poor but improving slowly. With over 1 1/2 inches of rain today and more predicted in the next few days, the lake is at full pool. There is a wide variance in surface water temperature as you travel around the lake. The water is very stained. On the Oconee River side it is muddy, with lots of floating debris, and the water is cooler, generally around 51 degrees. On the Richland Creek side the water is both cleaner and warmer. The backs of some of the creeks on the Richland Creek side are 54 degrees with much cleaner water. The Berry's Tournament Trail was on the lake Saturday and the numbers are definitely improving. For the first time in months over half the boats weighed in fish. The top boat had over 16 pounds. The Lake Oconee Anglers had a tournament on Tuesday and the fish caught 'averaged' almost 2 1/2 pounds. That's better than any month last year. The shad kill this winter may lead to much fatter bass this spring. The fish have started their migration to shallower water. Big fish are being caught in shallow water. The creeks on the Richland Creek side always turn on first. That is the place to be now. The Oconee River is much slower with the cold and muddy water. The fish are not necessarily under docks. They are headed for their spawning grounds. Fish the seawalls, the points, and the rocky shore lines. The best lures are a slow rolling spinner bait, small crank baits, Texas rigs and shaky head jigs. All must be fished as slowly as possible. The bite is extremely light so if feels like a snag, set the hook. Also watch your line for these light strikes. The Fish and Game Forecaster has good feeding periods from 10am until 1pm Saturday and 11am until 2 pm Sunday. Get your own copy from our web site.

Crappie fishing is poor to fair but improving. The fish have started biting in the creeks and larger coves on the Oconee River side but not on the Richland Creek side. Trolling green and black jigs tipped with a minnow in about 8 ft. of water has been working. The fish that have been biting are quality slabs. Hopefully next week we will have good weather and crappie fishing will be on. The Fish and Game Forecaster has good feeding periods from 10am until 1pm Saturday and 11am until 2 pm Sunday.
