THE SOUTHERN FISHING REPORT

LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 3.4 FEET, 45 DEGREES AND STAINED

Bass fishing is slow. The temperature of the water remains steady in the 42-45 degree range but the sun that has been shinning will warm the water a degree or two during the day. This warming of the surface will trigger the bass, especially the spots to move in search of food. Now is a good time to practice up on some deep water cranking. Some of the larger spots and largemouth can be caught cranking the ledges with the crank baits. A lot of anglers are reporting great success while using these new deep diving crank baits. Up in the rivers where the water is stained use the richer colors like fire tiger or the black and silver colors. Out on the main lake, go to the more natural shad and crawfish colors and work the channel ledges near the points and rocky banks. Waiting for the sun to come up will be a plus for cranking rip rap or any long stretch of larger rock. Early in the morning or after mid day, the Carolina rig is still a good bet. The red shad Culprit worm is working on bass holding to cover in the deeper water. Try the smaller sizes like the 4.5 or 5.0. A 24 to 30 leader is all that is needed to complete this set up. Use a Tru-Tungsten dual sinker to get more noise on the bottom. The spoons will still get you a few bites while vertical jigging brush piles. Work all the baits as slow as possible for best results.
