OK. I've
had just about all I can take of this lousy weather. Isn't
it suppose to be spring time? where's those beautiful spring
days? It's Crazy!--I get out on the lake and catch 40
or 50 bass one day then a cold front comes in and the bite shuts
down. The bass are just as confused as I am. they move in trying
to spawn and the water temperature drops, driving them back to
the staging areas near deep water...poor babies! They gotta
be frustrated.
One
good thing about the cold fronts is when the bass final do
get some decent weather and the water temperature stabilizes
and gets up in the mid to upper 60's, we will see a mass
movement of fish to the shallow shorelines, bays and canals.
I've seen this happen a few times in my 30 years on the
lake and the bass fishing was fantastic. a few
bass have spawned in-between the fronts but the majority of
the big girls are still out there waiting
Look for
March to be exceptional. the areas to concentrate on will be
the east side of the lake around otter creek and the shoreline
from piny point to pasture fence point. both big and Little
dolly bays will start to produce some big fish as usual. The
mid lake bar has fish holding on the edge of the grass beds
right now. If your using shiners. just put them out behind
your boat a slowly move along the edges of grass lines and
the reed point near the big red house. If your using
artificial baits, Tie on the rattling baits like the
Lucky craft, Spro's and traps in shad patterns. they will
trigger violent strikes as bass are trying to fatten
up for the spawn. As everyone knows I prefer to slow worm
fish this time of the year. I like to get in tight to cover
and pitch and flip.
Most of my
guide trips during the spring are live bait trips. Shiner fishing
is by far the best way to catch those big fish and its not
unusual to catch large numbers of bass this time of the year.
