Lake Tarpon Fall Fishing Report

It finally looks like we will get a little reprieve in the brutal hot summer weather. Fall fishing can be some of the best fishing of the year. the bass start to get a little more aggressive with the cooler water temperatures, they also school up a little more chasing shad, so when you find one, you should be able to catch a few more in the same areas instead of covering so much water. I like to start the morning off with top water around the main lake grass beds. Pop R's are great in open water but if your in the heavy grass nothing beats a Frog or Toad buzzed over the grass.

The worm bite has definitely been the way to go during the hot summer days, brush piles and deep grass areas have been good.. as the water cools down rattle traps, lucky crafts and other rattling baits will start produce better... I still like to throw Carolina and Texas rigged worms when the fish are not active or on bright sunny days.

For the live bait fishermen. November through March is the best time to catch those numbers of bass on shiners, for some reason lake tarpon has never been a very good summer time shiner lake like some other Florida lakes.. but December January February and March things change! these are the hay days, lots of big bass move into the shallower areas to spawn and this is by far the very best times to catch those big girls..

The areas that are holding fish right now are grass beds in Otter creek, the mouth of hunts canal and the south end of the lake from Brooker creek to the outfall canal...the mid lake bar will continue to produce as the water cools down..this area is very good in the fall!

The Anderson park bay also has some fish on the north side, from the canal out to the mouth. the water has been pretty dirty lately, but as it starts to clear up the bay should really turn on.
