WEST
POINT LAKE IS
DOWN 7.4 FEET, STAINED & 49
DEGREES BY CHRIS BELL
Bass fishing
has been better this week. Largemouth’s are
beginning to move up, but are in very small groups. We have had
luck by covering long distances using mid depth crank baits with
a very slow retrieve. Bomber and Bandit crankbaits in bright colors
are the best with the dirty water. When water temperatures warm
up in the late afternoon the bite can really turn on in productive
areas. Once you have located fish stick with them because they
have been really grouped up and feeding on bait. The most productive
areas have been chunk rock and red clay banks close to the main
river. On the southern end of the lake use the same mid depth crankbaits
in natural shad patterns. When cover is present slow down with
a 1/2 ounce All Terrain jig in dark colors or a 3/16 ounce Davis
Baits shaky head tipped with Zoom trick worm all colors green.
Do not expect many bites from probing the thick cover, but they
will be larger fish.
Hybrid
and striper fishing is fair. Fish have been spread out with the warming
temperatures. Fish are still in twenty to twenty five feet of
water on West Point Lake’s many humps and road
beds. Using your electronics drop live shad and jigging spoons
for these fish. During slow periods troll crankbaits from ten to
twelve feet depths in creek channels near the main river. Follow
the contours closely going into the mouth of creeks. Once you have
located fish continue trolling the same area for schools of fish.
The most productive areas have been from the Glass Bridge Park
to the Yellow Jacket Bridge.
Crappie fishing has improved with warming temperatures. Schools
of crappie are beginning to stack on main lake cover in eighteen
to twenty feet deep. Minnow presentations used close to cover have
produced the best giving a long soak period. Look for deep lay
downs and brush piles for best success. Some fish are still holding
on bridge columns. Use Jiffy Jigs in black and chartreuse and pink
and white colors or minnow presentations close to the bridge columns
for these fish that have not moved up. The best bridges have been
the 109 bridge and Railroad trestle.
