WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 2.10 FEET, STAINED & 52 DEGREES BY CHRIS BELL

Bass fishing has improved this week with the warmer temperatures in the afternoon. My best bites have come later in the afternoon after the sun has had time to warm water temperatures. Largemouth’s have begun moving up to move into spawning pockets in a pre spawn pattern lake wide. Most of my fish have been caught extremely shallow in the midway or in the back of spawning pockets. Use mid depth crankbaits in a shad pattern for these fish. Crankbaits to choose from are a Bomber 4A, Bandit 200, or a Rapala Shad Rap. Make long casts to the bank and retrieve with a slow to moderate retrieve. My bigger fish this week came on a ¼ oz All Terrain jig in Texas Craw with a green pumpkin Net Bait Paca Chunk. Spotted bass have begun to move up on lay downs and shallow rock on main lake. Use a 1/8 oz Davis Baits Shaky head with a Zoom green pumpkin trick worms. Spotted bass will become more aggressive over the next couple of weeks leading to the spawn.

Hybrid and striper fishing is good. Fish have begun working their way into the mouths of major creeks. The best creeks have been Half Moon, Jackson, and Whitewater. Fish are relating very closely to shad providing some great trolling action. Troll crankbaits that run ten to fifteen feet deep similar to Rapala’s #7 Glass Rap or a Bomber 6A in a shad pattern. Some fish can still be found on humps and roadbeds, but have not been as plentiful unless bait was present. Use live shad dropped into these schools of fish located on structure.

Crappie fishing has been on fire. Schools of crappie are beginning to school in the mouths of major creeks. Tolling has been the most productive way to catch these fish. Use minnow and jig presentations trolled at ten feet deep. For jig presentations pink and white Jiffy Jigs have been the best. The best creeks have been Half Moon and Jackson creeks. The Fish and Game Forecaster has good feeding periods from 10am until 1pm Saturday and 11am until 2 pm Sunday. Get your own copy from our web site.
