The Professor’s Back in Class with Sonar GPS 201 DVD
by Brad Wiegmann

Wilson Fraziers Sonar/GPS 201 DVDWell anglers, class is in session again.  In the just released DVD, Sonar/GPS 201 by Frazier Marine Group with Professor Wilson Frazier as the instructor.  The Professor goes into detail on how anglers can get more out of their sonar and GPS units.  This is the second in the series of step-by-step educational DVD.

Wilson Frazier, aka the Professor, is an authority when it comes to sonar/GPS units with over 30 years of being a Lowrance Pro Staffer and part of the tournament support team.  Today, the Professor spends much of his time providing seminars all over the country to pros and fishing enthusiasts teaching them how to use their sonar/GPS units.  The Professor is also the president of Frazier Marine Group Elite Series Products and Fishing Aids (www.itainttv.com)  including: GPS/Sonar Cleaner-Krystal Vision, Multi-use cleaner-Shazzam, Eraser Degreaser, Tire Shine, Marker Buoy System Bac-to-its, Shock Guard Mount Stabilizer, Slick Sides, Braid-Aid, Cork Magic, and Rod Glo.

The DVD Sonar/GPS 201 has three sections: Sonar 201, GPS 201, and Questions & Answers-Professors Mail Bag.  In Sonar 201, the Professor starts with a quick review of Sonar 101 including how the sonar unit works, what you are really seeing on the units screen, and the significance of resetting your sonar unit.  After reviewing, the Professor explains what some of the marks are on the sonar screen beginning with Algae and Plankton or something call surface clutter.  “Sonar can pick up the smallest of objects, even a thermolcline,” he pointed out.   The Professor also goes into detail on how schools of shad appear on the sonar screen, sometimes referred to as Casper the Ghost, which is a school of bait fish that takes on the shape of a ghost.  Another topic is the size of groups of shad or fish that are appearing on the sonar screen.

The DVD also goes into detail on what flat lines are that appear on your sonar screen, lines that appear to be streaking up or down, why your sonar unit cannot register what the depth is, the rule of 1/3, cone size, how to use your depth curser to help you catch fish, zoom in and zoom out buttons, upper and lower limits, how to get back to where you have just been using Bac-to-it Buoys, why the Bac-to-it marker buoys are color coded, and numerous other topics that anglers will find educational for learning more about reading and utilizing their sonar unit.

In GPS 201, the Professor reviews how the GPS unit works, what you are looking at on your GPS unit, the airport runway theory, how to return to a way point, and other topics he covered.  After reviewing, the Professor explains how to utilize my trails, change the color of trails, and several other tips for getting the most out of trails on the GPS unit.  One tip that the Professor gives is, “Anglers can use today’s color of the week for keeping track of their trails.”  Also topics such as zoom rate, how to mark your spot, and the importance of using colored marker buoys are covered in depth.

The last section, Questions & Answers-Professor’s Mail Bag, Frazier goes over a number of questions that were either emailed or snail mailed to him.  The questions range from using their sonar units, where to locate a transducer, how to transfer Data, how to transfer Data to a GPS unit, and the number one question the Professor has been asked in over 31 years in the sonar unit industry.

All of the information is explained in easy to understand drawings and in straight forward, uncomplicated terms.  Each educational DVD is a building block to the next DVD in the series Sonar & GPS, where the Professor continues to educate and enhance your knowledge of sonar and GPS units.  In all of the DVD’s, Frazier has challenged anglers to practice what they have just watched.  Students…anglers have finally been given homework assignments that they can enjoy doing.
